How to Write a CV/Resume in Japanese

Applying for a job in Japan? Your application is incomplete without a CV. So, it's time to create a resume. Well, this resume has a similar section as an English resume. However, the most important thing about it is that it leaves less room for creative writing. Most sections are to-the-point.  However, you need to be ready to provide some more personal information about you in your resume. Let's get started and know how to write a resume for applying for a job in Japan.

 

There are two documents that you will prepare In Japan.

  1.  rirekisho 履歴書
  2. shokumu-keirekisho 職務経歴書

What is rirekisho 履歴書?

It is a resume where you will give your self introduction. It means providing all personal details such as your name, address, date of birth, contact details. Also, share information of your background like your degree, and work experience.

What is Shokumu-keirekisho 職務経歴書?

It is your CV that explains and highlights your work experience, skills, and achievements in Detail.

A Handwritten or Virtual Resume?

If you are wondering whether you need to send a hand-written resume or a digital one, the answer is check for a job description. Send him what he asks for. If nothing is mentioned, prefer an online resume. It's because this CV is simple and you can download a Japanese resume template and then edit it quickly to make it best fit for a job.

How to Write a Japanese CV?

Let's have a complete understanding of every single section of a Japanese resume.

Photo

Take a professional headshot and make it a part of your resume. There are some photobooth that let you grab the best picture quickly. You need to dress professionally for your resume. It means wearing a suit and tidying up your style a bit. Don't wear glasses or hats for pictures.

Resume Submission Date

Mention resume submission date in this format (year/month/day). Sometimes, you create a resume beforehand. It works too but it shouldn't be more than three month old.

Full Name / 氏名 

You will write your full name in the given box.

生年月日 – Date of birth (Age)

You will write your date of birth in this format (y/m/d). If they ask for 満, it means you need to mention your current age as well. When you download a template, it requires you to enter date in the Japanese Calendar. You won't have to worry about that. The best thing to do is to use an online website that helps you convert your age to the Japanese Calendar.

現住所 – Current Address

Mention your current address.

連絡先 – Contact Information

When your address is the same and nothing changes then you can write the same as above.

 

性別 – Gender

You need to choose between 男 (male) or 女 (female).

電話 – Telephone number

Give your contact details alongside country code.

メールアドレス – E-mail

Provide your email id and make sure that you are writing the right one.
 

学歴 – Education

You will provide complete educational history. Starting from school and its department. Start from high school and then move to inter, graduation and master courses.

If you are still in school, mention “卒業見込み after writing name of your school. 

職歴 – Work History

You have to give details of your work. Normally, you mention the latest first but when it comes to CV in Japan. You will take a U-Turn and start from your first company and job position. Mention date when you joined the company, your job position, and when you left it.

If you are still working in a company, it's vital to mention 

 “現在に至る” (currently still employed).

Qualifications

Do you have any certification, training or special qualification related to your job field? It's time to mention it clearly. Provide a clear official name of qualification alongside the date when you get it. 

Are you a fresher? No qualifications? No issue, simply write  特になし(none in particular)

Jiko PR- Skill and Appeal (自己 PR)

This section is your PR, It means you need to self promote yourself. Make sure you match your CV's skill with that of skills that an employer mentioned in the job post. Always add those skills that enhance your chances of landing on a job.



 

志望の動機 – motivation for applying - You will give details of some points or passion behind this job applicant. 

特技 – special skills- Give details of job relevant skills 

好きな学科 – interests

You have to make yourself very appealing to employers by sharing some great interest.

 通勤時間 – Commute Time

Tell your employer how long it will take you to reach the office from home every day. 

扶養家族(配偶者を除く)– Number of Dependents 

Are you supporting your family? Mention number of dependants. Although you support your spouse, you can't count it in this section.

 

 配偶者 – Spouse and 配偶者の扶養義務 – Spouse Obligation

Married person needs to circle  “有” (yes) while a single or unmarried can circle “無” (no).

配偶者の扶養義務 – Spouse Obligation

Will you support your spouse? Circle yes or no.

Personal requests on a Japanese Resume

Do you have a personal request? If yes, then you can write it in this final section. Don't have any? Simply write this line“貴社規定に従います” meaning is  “I will comply with your company regulations”.
